Hugh M. Brown

Hugh Brown adds more than 30 years of executive management experience to our board’s collective talents. Mr. Brown is the retired President and Chief Executive Officer of BAMSI, Inc., a full-service engineering and technical services company he founded in 1978. Under his leadership, the company performed work at NASA locations across the country and was consistently recognized as one of the most successful privately owned firms in the Southeast. Headquartered in Titusville, FL, BAMSI employed more than 2,200 highly skilled professional and technical personnel in 11 states, achieving annual sales of more than $90 million in just over 18 years.

Mr. Brown currently serves as Honorary Consul, Côte D’Ivoire, and is a member of the boards of directors of SunTrust Bank of Orlando, Brown & Brown Insurance, the United Way of Brevard, and the Council for Educational Change.

He is a past chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and Federal Reserve Bank of Jacksonville. Additionally, he served on the boards of Blue Cross & Blue Shield, PSS World Medical, and the Florida Council of “100.” He also served on the Governor’s Commission on Education and as Chairman of the Florida Space Authority (now called Space Florida).

Throughout his career and community involvement, Mr. Brown has won numerous awards, including:

  • U.S. Small Business Administration’s 8(a) Graduate of the Year Award

    During a White House ceremony in September 1991, President George Bush presented Mr. Brown with this award. The President and Mrs. Bush then invited Mr. Brown and his wife to the White House to attend a state dinner held in honor of President Carlos Menem of Argentina.

  • Florida Entrepreneur of the Year

    In 1993, Mr. Brown was chosen in the services category by Ernst & Young and Inc. magazine. Subsequently, he’s been selected several times by Ernst & Young to participate as a judge on the state and national judging panels for Entrepreneur of the Year awards.

  • Entrepreneurial Award for Performance Excellence

    Mr. Brown was given this award in 1996 by the Jim Moran Institute.

  • Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame for East Central Florida

    Mr. Brown was inducted in 1989.

  • Small Minority-Owned Business of the Year at the Kennedy Space Center

    He led BAMSI to this award four times.

  • Regional, Minority Small Business Person of the Year

    Mr. Brown was chosen as the recipient for this award for the Southeast Region.

  • Small Business Person of the Year, 1985

    He earned this honor from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

Mr. Brown is an active community and business leader, as well as an advocate of success and achievement through a “can do” attitude. He believes in the ethics of hard work and treating people with dignity and respect. Mr. Brown is an avid supporter of young people and a frequent motivational speaker on college campuses and at business forums across Florida and the country.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, and graduated from Central State University in Ohio with a bachelor’s of science degree in Mathematics and Industrial Engineering.
