
Kevin B. Churchwell, MD, currently serves as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. Having joined the organization in December 2010, Dr. Churchwell also serves as a Nemours Senior Vice President.
As the lead administrator in the Delaware Valley, Dr. Churchwell is actively driving efforts to increase the quality and affordability of care for all children. Under his leadership, the Leapfrog Group, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, recognized duPont Hospital for Children as one of the 12 safest children’s hospitals. In the 2012-2013 Best Children’s Hospital edition of U.S. News & World Report, Nemours ranked in 9 out of the 10 programs recognized by the publication. Most recently, Nemours duPont successfully achieved Magnet® recognition as a reflection of its nursing professionalism, teamwork, and superiority in patient care. To further enhance the child and family experience at Nemours, Dr. Churchwell is promoting stronger collaborations between administrators, clinicians, researchers, and educators, and is spearheading the corporate fundraising efforts in support of the $257.5 million hospital expansion set to open in 2014.
Prior to joining Nemours, he was CEO and Executive Director for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital, part of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He previously served in several other capacities, including Chief-of-Staff, Medical Director for the Children's Health and Injury Prevention Program, Medical Director for the Pediatric Critical Care Services, and Transport Director.
A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Vanderbilt Medical School in Nashville, Dr. Churchwell completed his pediatric residency and a clinical fellowship in Anesthesia and Pediatric Critical Care at Boston Children's Hospital. Since 1993, Dr. Churchwell has been a clinician and faculty member at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is a diplomat for the National Board of Medical Examiners and is board certified with the American Board of Pediatrics.
As an extension of his dedication to pediatric health care, Dr. Churchwell is active in the greater community. He was named one of the top 25 minority health care executives by Modern Healthcare magazine and recognized as one of Nashville Business Journal's 2008 Health Care Heroes. In 2011 joined by his brothers Andre and Keith, Dr. Churchwell was presented with the 2011 Trumpet Award for African-American achievement. Becker Hospital Review recognized Dr. Churchwell as one of its 2012 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Healthcare Systems, and he was the honorary chairman of the United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware annual award dinner. He is a member of the CEO Council of Growth, Greater Select Philadelphia. While in Nashville, he developed a public high school outreach program, helped build a safe playground, and was inducted into the Nashville Public Schools Hall of Fame by the Nashville Alliance for Public Education in 2009.
