Donald M. BerwickThe 2001 Alfred I. duPont Award for Excellence in Childrens Health Care was presented to Donald M. Berwick, MD, MPP, President and CEO of the Institute for Health care Improvement in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Berwick was recognized for his national and international leadership in improving the quality of care for children as well as adults. Trained as a pediatrician at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Berwick and the Institute for Health care Improvement partner with health care institutions across the nation and in foreign countries to assess, analyze, and develop designs to improve the quality of care delivered. Dr. Berwick is the author of more than 100 professional articles and several books on the subject of quality improvement; he is also a leader in national forums to improve patient safety and clinical care.

Dr. Berwicks name is synonymous with quality improvement in health care in this country. Through his many achievements, he has sought to develop and disseminate information on how care for children and others can be improved, and to enhance the application of scientific evidence and "best practices" in medical decision making.
