Legacy
Nemours founder, Alfred I. duPont firmly believed that “it is the duty of everyone in the world to do what is within his power to alleviate human suffering.” Mr. duPont’s words and his legacy of compassion have lived on for more than 70 years through the care and services provided to children and families at Nemours.
Our journey began in 1936 with the formation of The Nemours Foundation under the terms of Mr. duPont’s will; it began to deliver on his vision in 1940 when the Alfred I. duPont Institute, a pediatric orthopedic hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, opened its doors. Today, Nemours has grown to become one of the nation’s largest integrated pediatric health systems, providing hospital- and clinic-based specialty care, primary care, prevention and health information services, and research and medical education programs aimed to improve the lives of children and families throughout the Delaware Valley and in Florida.
The Nemours Way

Throughout our system, NemoursOne, a fully comprehensive electronic medical record, connects teams of physicians, researchers, nurses, and other health professionals so they can simultaneously combine efforts to understand and support the child’s medical, emotional and social needs.
Our knowledge combined with our electronic capabilities seamlessly extends to parents and referring physicians—integral members of the care team. Processes such as family-centered rounds, and systems that offer secure access to the electronic medical record, allow every member of the care team to make contributions toward providing the best care experience on behalf of the child
A healthier future for children
At Nemours, we are working to continuously improve the quality and safety of care for children everywhere. Through dynamic professional and academic affiliations, we exchange clinical and research expertise with referring physicians, physicians-in-training and other health professionals to advance a higher standard of care. We offer comprehensive health education online for parents, teens and kids, to address the whole health of the child from birth to age 18. And we promote health information and programs, tools and resources among teachers, policy makers and other members of the community to promote health in all the places children live, learn and play.
