One-third of children in the United States are currently considered overweight or obese based on their Body Mass Index (BMI). Nemours is proactively addressing this important issue. We’re proud to have several leading national childhood obesity experts right here at Nemours. We offer the longest-running hospital-based obesity clinic in Delaware, a dedicated “Healthy Choices Clinic” in Florida, along with weight management programs and services at all Nemours locations, and Nemours Health & Prevention Services—an entire division focused on community-based childhood obesity prevention and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
Nemours Health and Prevention Services works with families and community partners to help children grow up healthy. Our goals are to affect long-term changes in policies and practices that promote child health, and leverage community strengths and resources to have the greatest impact on the most children.
NHPS is “planting the seeds for better health” by working with community partners to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent obesity among children in a variety of settings: child care, after-school care, physicians offices, at home and at play. Our healthy behavior prescription, 5-2-1-Almost None,* has reached more than 100,000 Delaware children and has been introduced in Central Florida.
*Five fruits and veggies per day, two or fewer hours of screen time, one or more hours of physical activity, and almost no sugary beverages.
