Classrooms on Wheels
Nemours BrightStart!’s mobile classrooms are a one-of-a-kind way to take our reading readiness program and services almost anywhere. With an inviting image across the side of a darling little boy ‘driving’ to a better reading future, the “classrooms on wheels” truly take Nemours on the road.
This extension of Nemours BrightStart! will reach into North Florida’s schools, community child care centers, malls and other places where families gather, making it easier for parents to access information and build skills. Look for the Nemours BrightStart! “classrooms on wheels” in your area.
What are “Mobile Classrooms?”
Nemours’ BrightStart!’s largest mobile classroom vehicle is a 40-foot long, state-of-the-art, custom fully-equipped vehicle that will provide about 270 square feet of uniquely designed space with two classrooms and one observation office.- The two smaller mobile classroom vehicles are also custom made, fully equipped, 22-feet long and will have about 90 square feet of uniquely designed space with one classroom each.
What do they do in there?
These mobile classrooms open up many possibilities for Nemours BrightStart! Activities in the community:
Reading Readiness Screening:
- In a session that lasts about 20 minutes, specially-trained Nemours BrightStart! Staff members meet one-on-one with each Pre-K child and give simple tasks to measure language skills important for reading, such as letter recognition, letter sounds, vocabulary and breaking words into syllables.
- In the friendly learning environment with separate ‘classroom’ areas, we help the child feel at ease and give positive feedback for participation. Parents receive a brief summary of their child’s results, and are encouraged to ask any question about early literacy, their child’s progress, and next steps.
Reading Readiness Intervention:
These mobile classrooms are fully equipped for our unique and highly effective educational intervention. When needed, we will teach small groups of children to prepare them for reading success.
- Nemours BrightStart!’s expert early literacy specialists will model read-aloud methods and fun reading readiness activities you can do at home or in the classroom.
Information Sharing:
- These mobile classrooms are the perfect “vehicle” for bringing the science of brain-based research closer to home, putting more kids on the road to reading.
- They create greater visibility, which leads to greater awareness about early reading success.
Where will I see these mobile classrooms?
The BrightStart! Classrooms will be pulling into selected childcare centers, preschools, and elementary schools, where space is limited, for screening and intervention for young children.- You will definitely see them on the highways, roads and in neighborhoods around North Florida.
- Also, look for them at community events, which will be posted on our calendar.
A Note From our Executive Director, Laura Bailet, PhD
We are excited to bring this new feature to our community funded by Nemours. These mobile classrooms will allow us to take our services to almost anywhere. This extension of Nemours BrightStart! will reach into schools, community centers, malls and other places where families gather, making it easier for parents to access information and build skills.
Nemours BrightStart!, using brain science, offers a groundbreaking program that transforms the way children approach reading. It identifies children at risk of dyslexia and reading difficulties, and teaches them before they have a chance to fail. It is a life-changing program that takes proven, effective research and translates it to the preschool classroom. In response to changing community needs, we will now have the versatility to offer our services in more locations than ever before.
