What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is the most common cause of reading problems. It occurs in 15 to 20 percent of the population and has a genetic and neurobiological basis.
A disability that runs in families, the children whose parents struggled with reading are more likely to have dyslexia.
Dyslexia is not the result of low intelligence. Children with dyslexia are very smart but have subtle brain processing problems that make reading difficult. Generally, dyslexia describes a bright mind that learns differently.
Children with dyslexia often show significant gifts in the areas controlled by the right side of the brain. They tend to excel in artistic, athletic and mechanical endeavors, architecture, science, music, and creative problem-solving.
