September Newsletter – BrightStart! News, Parent as Child's First Teacher Initiative

Jacksonville, Florida
Wednesday, November 05, 2008 @ 05:52 PM EST

Traci WalkerEvery other month, Nemours Brightstart! sends out a parenting newsletter to over 6,000 people in the community. Each newsletter corresponds with a parenting workshop, provides information to parents, and helpful tips on raising their children, as well as an opportunity for parents to write in and tell about an experience they had with their child that corresponds with the theme of the BrightStart! newsletter. One lucky participant receives a $100 Winn-Dixie gift card.

Traci Walker was the winner of the September Parenting Improvement Activity. When asked to tell is about a picture walk or read-aloud with her children, Traci Walker wrote, “One of the books that I have read to my kids was Chicken Little. I always try to read to them and show the pictures but as soon as I get started they turn it around and always end up reading to me, or what they would call reading. It always makes me laugh because while I use the words from the book to tell them what the story is about they just look at the pictures to tell me what the story is a bout. It really is a joy.”

Nemours BrightStart! is able to provide these workshops as well as the bi-monthly parenting newsletter free of charge to the Jacksonville community, through the Parent as Child’s First Teacher grant between United Way of Northeast Florida, the Early Learning Coalition of Duval County, Episcopal Children Services, and Nemours BrightStart! Winn Dixie has generously donated, for the second year in a row, $100 gift cards to be given to one participant at the close of every parenting workshop as well as the winner of write-in the parenting improvement activity from the BrightStart! bi-monthly newsletters.
