Orlando
In Orlando, Nemours Children’s Clinic provides specialized medical services for children through all of its pediatric divisions. The medical staff draws on personal expertise and the Nemours legacy of compassion to provide the highest level of care. The Orlando practice is pursuing the addition of a much-needed children’s hospital and outpatient clinic co-located on the academic campus at Lake Nona with the Burnham Institute, the planned University of Central Florida Medical School and related life science initiatives.
The planning and design process for the new clinic and hospital that continued through most of the year was suspended late in 2006 to allow consideration of other locations in light of significant developments in the Orlando community. Those developments allowed the Lake Nona site to gain favor, and in fact that location was the basis for approval by the State of Florida in 2007 of the Certificate of Need for a children’s health campus including a top-flight hospital as part of an integrated system of care.
New multidisciplinary programs were established in Orlando this past year, expanding the facility’s capabilities. The division of gastroenterology established two new programs to support and treat conditions of the bowel and liver. A team of nurses, nutritionists, social workers and physicians came together to treat children with inflammatory bowel disease. The program served about 300 children. Also, a hepatology clinic was established in collaboration with the University of Florida to provide highly specialized care for children with serious liver diseases and transplants.
The Orlando Clinic also launched Healthy Choices, a multidisciplinary program to address obesity in children. As one of the greatest health risks facing children, childhood obesity is a high priority throughout the Nemours system. The problem affects all children, regardless of ethnicity, gender or socio-economic status. Healthy Choices brings together gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, psychologists, nutritionists, dieticians, physical therapists and exercise physiologists to address obesity related diseases and the behaviors that lead to obesity.
