Hematology
The Hematology/Oncology Division at the Nemours Children’s Clinic in Orlando offers services in a broad range of blood (hematology) and cancer (oncology) diagnoses and problems. Ongoing care is coordinated with the involvement of the child’s primary care physician. Patients with sickle cell disease and other blood-related diseases (hemoglobinopathies), as well as patients with bleeding disorders and complicated hematologic disorders, are managed by the Divisions three pediatric hematologists/oncologists.
The Division partners with physicians at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women and Children to establish a state-of-the-art management program of pediatric malignancies. Specific clinics exist for sickle cell disease, hemophilia, brain tumors, and follow-up after-cancer treatment.
The Division of Hematology/Oncology also participates in the Children’s Oncology Group for Research (COG), a nationwide group that provides the Division with protocols, or plans for cancer treatment. The Division collects data about these protocols and their patients’ responses and sends it to COG. The purpose of this relationship is to make treatment standard and improve cure rates.
