Advanced Cardiac Care: Dedicated Professionals
The Nemours Cardiac Center consists of a cardiac intensive care unit, a 16-bed step-down unit, a state-of-the-art digital cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology suite and an operating room, all used only for the care of infants and children with heart disease.
The pediatric cardiologists, pediatric cardiac surgeons and pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists work together every day to provide the most up-to-date care available to children with cardiac problems. In addition to first-class open-heart surgery, this care includes modern approaches to closing abnormal holes in the heart and opening narrowed blood vessels and valves in the catheterization lab without surgery. Many heart rhythm abnormalities can be permanently treated by placing catheters in the heart, freeing young patients from a lifetime of medications. In some complex cases, members of our team work together to perform combined open-heart and catheterization procedures, expanding the treatment options and improving the outlook for scores of children with congenital heart disease.
These treatment capabilities, offered in a mere handful of centers in the United States, are available at the Nemours Cardiac Center. In addition to improving the functional outcome for the heart, the catheterization and combined procedures often decrease discomfort for the child and shorten hospital stays.
A Home Away From Home
We designed our center to act as a “home away from home” for our patients and parents throughout the hospitalization. Patient rooms are furnished with beds for parents and child. Parents continue to occupy the room during their child’s Intensive Care Unit stay, allowing them to be comfortable as well as available to the child day and night. Cardiac Center rooms also feature a private bath, telephone, TV and VCR. Families also enjoy convenient access to laundry facilities, a playroom and a kitchen.
