Common Financial Terms

The following terms are commonly used on medical financial statements:

  • Co-payment
    The out-of-pocket payment you are expected to pay, such as $10 for an office visit.

  • Deductible
    The amount of money you must pay each year before your insurer begins to pay some of your bills.

  • Coinsurance
    The percentage of your medical bills you are expected to pay.

  • EOB
    EOB stands for "Explanation of Benefits." This is a form that an insurance company will send to the subscriber and to the doctor or hospital explaining the amount of payments made by the insurer for a particular service.

  • Guarantor
    The person who is responsible for a bill.
