For most kids, the adolescent years are a rollercoaster of physical and emotional growth. It’s no wonder, then, that caring for kids this age requires a special touch. And that’s just where the professionals of the Adolescent Medicine Program, offered at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, come in.
What We Do
Our Adolescent Medicine team is specially trained in the care of children between the ages of 10 and 17. That means they’re uniquely qualified to evaluate and treat any health concerns related to puberty, and to be a reassuring voice about what’s typical and what’s not. Perhaps even more important, it means they know just how to speak – and listen – to your child to get to the heart of any issues that may be affecting his or her physical health, social growth, self-view, mood, and even academic success.

Some of the issues we commonly see include:
- Menstrual cycle problems (irregular, absent, painful, or excessive menstruation)
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Contraception
- Menstrual suppression for the management of chronic disease
- Breast disorders
- Scrotal/testicular disorders
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
- Vaginal and penile discharge

When it comes to treatment, we consider it a privilege to work closely with Nemours specialists from other areas (such as Behavioral Health and Nutrition for a child with an eating disorder), as well as with you, the parent, to make sure your child gets the personalized care he or she deserves. We also offer guidance about transitioning your teen’s health care to adult caregivers when the time comes.
Comprehensive, confidential, and proactive care for the whole child. That’s what you can expect when you choose the Nemours Adolescent Medicine Program.
