Critical Care
As part of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, physicians in the Critical Care Medicine Division, along with fellows in training, provide diagnosis, treatment, advanced life support, and monitoring for critically ill children with diverse medical and surgical problems.
We’re proud of the high level of patient safety and quality of care we’ve been able to achieve. For example, in patients who’ve had central lines placed (tubes inserted into a blood vessel near the heart to deliver medications and fluids), we’ve had no infections reported in over a year. Nemours’ PICU also has one of the lowest mortality rates (adjusted for risk) when compared with other PICUs nationwide, according to a research database sponsored by the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). And because of our ability to guarantee 24/7 access to pediatric-certified ICU doctors, we’ve met an important safety goal set by the Leapfrog Group, a consortium whose mission is to improve health care by tracking hospitals’ progress in adopting technologies and services that increase patient safety
In our 22-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), every attempt is made to care for patients in private rooms. All rooms are furnished with state-of-the-art technology and equipment. The PICU will soon be undergoing significant renovation to increase the capacity for more patients, provide additional technology, and enhance the comfort of parents by during their stay.
Our intensivists engage in cooperative academic and clinical relationships with Christiana Care Health System and Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. We also offer a highly regarded Critical Care Fellowship Program.
