Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal abnormality, occurring in approximately one out of every 800 births. Despite sharing some physical similarities and some common medical and developmental problems, each child with Down syndrome is a unique individual with his or her own health and developmental potential.
The goal of the Down Syndrome Clinic is to maximize your child’s potential by providing coordinated care from a variety of medical and therapeutic specialists all in one place. At each visit, several Down syndrome experts work together to assess, monitor, and prevent medical problems; provide resources, referrals, and emotional support; encourage opportunities for children and families with Down syndrome to interact with one other; and offer genetic services.
What You Can Expect at a Visit
Down Syndrome Clinic visits are comprehensive and may last an hour or more. At each visit, your child will be evaluated by a medical geneticist and a physician assistant, and any appropriate tests and referrals will be ordered. If a medical problem is found, we can coordinate more specialized care with a Nemours subspecialist. A developmental/behavioral medicine expert will also be on hand to discuss specific concerns, including autism.
Because physical, occupational, and speech therapy are critical for children with Down syndrome, your child’s therapy plans will be reviewed at your visit as well. We want to make sure that each child has a customized therapy plan in place that meets his or her developmental needs.
After your child’s first clinic visit, we anticipate follow-up visits at six-month intervals until age three. At that point, the visits generally become annual. Of course, if you have any questions or concerns any time in between, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
