Nemours’ Infectious Disease specialists are there when your child seems to have symptoms of an infection that are either more severe, longer lasting, or in some other way puzzling or unusual to your child’s primary care doctor.
Children who are referred to our team will meet with an attending Infectious Disease physician as well others on the team, who will take a complete medical history and perform a thorough physical exam. Many types of diagnostic testing are available, from blood tests to state-of-the-art medical imaging. Our doctors also benefit from the support of a superb team of clinical microbiologists, immunologists, and pediatric pathologists.
Once we uncover the cause of your child’s symptoms, we’ll create a management plan, often in consultation with other pediatric specialists. To ensure your child’s condition continues to be well monitored and managed, we always communicate this plan to your child’s primary care or referring doctor.
Some of the problems we evaluate include:
- Chronic or recurrent infections
- Pediatric HIV/AIDS
- Perinatal exposure to HIV (that is, exposure to the virus around the time of birth)
- Unusual bacterial, fungal, or viral infections
- Unexplained fever
- Lyme disease
- Infectious mononucleosis
- Pneumonia
- Tuberculosis
- Bone and joint infections
- Encephalitis
- Meningitis
- Kawasaki disease
- Rheumatic fever
- Hepatitis
- Infections in patients whose immune systems are not fully functioning
