Neurological Health

The pediatric neurology experts at Nemours evaluate and treat children with a wide range of conditions affecting the brain, nerves, and muscles. Our physicians are board certified and have specialized training in pediatrics and neurology. They work hand in hand with highly skilled nurse practitioners to offer a comprehensive program for children with neurologic issues. Some of the conditions we evaluate include:

  • seizure disorders
  • muscle and nerve disorders
  • cerebral palsy
  • migraine and other headaches
  • neurodegenerative disorders
  • developmental delay
  • learning disorders
  • language disorders
  • metabolic disorders
  • tics and Tourette syndrome
  • tuberous sclerosis
  • neurofibromatosis and other neurocutaneous syndromes

As part of our comprehensive approach to care, we offer an on-site neurophysiology laboratory with state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, including EEG and video EEG; sleep studies; electromyography (EMG) testing; and nerve conduction studies (NCV).

We help to facilitate neurocognitive assessments for a variety of developmental and learning problems. These evaluations, performed cooperatively with psychologists and other medical and behavior specialists, help in the identification and treatment of such conditions as ADHD, autistic spectrum disorders, dyslexia, cognitive delays, and learning disabilities, particularly those associated with certain genetic conditions.

We are pleased to offer specialty programs for children with epilepsy, recurrent headaches, and neuromuscular disorders.

Muscular Dystrophy

The Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children has the only Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) program in the state of Delaware. Its purpose is to evaluate and treat children with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases. In Florida, the MDA program coordinates patient care through the Nemours Children’s Clinic, Jacksonville.

The care plan for children with muscular dystrophy is managed by a pediatric neurologist, in collaboration with specialists from orthopedic surgery and pulmonary medicine. Additional services offered through this program include nursing, nutrition, physical therapy, wheelchair evaluation, social work, and assistive technology.
