Functional Athletic Screening Tool (F.A.S.T.)

The Functional Athletic Screening Tool (FAST) is designed to help keep young athletes playing the sports they love. Recognizing the importance of not only addressing performance, but also health and wellness, FAST provides a one-on-one assessment of the young athlete. The goal: To determine where they could improve and address how to avoid injuries and strengthen their performance.

FAST is an individual functional assessment that includes the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and other static and dynamic measures of flexibility, strength, balance, agility, core stability, coordination, and body control. This assessment is followed by the development of a personal exercise program tailored to each athletes’ age, sport, and performance goals.

The program consists of a one-hour assessment and a second (separate) one-hour appointment to review results and the personalized exercise program.

Program Benefits

Unique features of FAST include:

  • a one-on-one format that allows for better identification of individual risk factors
  • individualized exercise programs (developed specifically for each athlete following assessment) that can be performed at the Center for Sports Medicine at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children or at home or a health club
  • education about safe exercise techniques to ensure athlete safety
  • assessments designed and performed by certified athletic trainers and physical therapists that are experts in the areas of exercise, fitness, injury prevention, and recognition of physical activity and sports related injuries in kids and teens

Eligibility

  • Open to athletes 12 and older.
  • Must have medical clearance from a physician to participate.

Program Structure

Appointments are required and are available Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Following the second appointment, athletes may use the Center for Sports Medicine to complete their exercise programs under the guidance of an athletic trainer/physical therapist for an additional fee. All athletes will receive a copy of their evaluation and personalized exercise program.

Program Fees

The FAST program is a health and wellness program, not formal therapy. That means insurance companies can not be billed, so it's an out-of-pocket expense.

Total Cost:

$225*

*The price covers the assessment and one follow-up visit. Additional sessions cost $20 for every 15-minute increment.

Fees, as of June 2011, are subject to change.
