Nemours Health & Prevention Services
Nemours Health & Prevention Services (NHPS), based in Newark, Delaware, works with families and community partners to help children grow up healthy.
Our goal is to aid in the implementation of policies and practices outside of the clinical environment that promote child health.
We are committed to helping children and families make healthy lifestyle choices by working with partner organizations to influence policy, as well as serving as a resource for parents. Our work is organized by both geography and the age/developmental stage of children, as we strive for a holistic approach to obesity prevention and behavioral health.
Focus on Childhood Obesity
Nemours is taking a leading role to help people understand the causes and health implications of obesity and to promote healthier lifestyles among children and families.
Our initial area of emphasis is childhood obesity prevention, the centerpiece of which is 5-2-1-Almost None, our formula for a healthy lifestyle.
Focus on Emotional & Behavioral Health
Nemours wants all adults to have access to helpful options for handling and nurturing healthy emotions and behaviors in young children.
Our second area of focus is emotional and behavioral health during early childhood - birth to age five. We provide training and education to teachers and parents on how to build resiliency in children as well as how to teach them how to act and think in healthy ways.
Giving Delaware Youth a Voice About Their Health
NHPS recently completed a state-wide project to gather health perceptions from Delaware youth. Working with Boys and Girls Clubs, High Schools, and 4-H Clubs across the state, we asked the youth to answer these questions, “What in your environment helps you to be healthy and what in your environment prevents you from being healthy?”
The participants used photography combined with narrative to document their health realities, promote critical reflection, enhance group discussion, share knowledge, and facilitate empowerment. The youth's chosen photographs were combined into a single presentation and exhibited across the state.
If you had the opportunity to see one of these exhibits, please share your thoughts with our quick survey: English or Spanish.
