School Type Description

Milton Elementary

Physical Activity

"No Child Left on Their Behind" program gets students up and moving during morning announcements with "Morning Movement to Music" and a physical activity homework assignment that must be signed as completed by parents.

Brader Elementary

Physical Activity

Offers incentives for children to walk to school and a lunch time “eat and jog” with their physical education teacher. Children win prizes for their participation.

Brandywine Springs Elementary

Physical Activity

DARE to Live Healthy the Red Clay Way teaches kids   about healthier living by encouraging physical activity with open gym nights for families and by participating in the New Castle County Girls on the Run program.  

Stokes Elementary

Physical Activity

Coordinated School Health Program is a multi-faceted program that incorporates bullying prevention, nutritional information, CATCH!, a walking program for students and staff and other activities that help support healthy lifestyles and encourage students to participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

South Dover Elementary

Physical Activity

On Fitness Fridays, staff and students start the day with warm up exercises and dancing. Students enjoy learning popular routines such as Thriller, the Chicken Dance, Electric Slide, and Cha Cha Slide.

Downes Elementary

Physical Activity

Downes Healthy School Program includes teachers working in Sharkercise and Jammin’ Minutes in the classroom to provide students with brief intervals of physical activity during the school day. Another program called TREK gives students an opportunity to win prizes for walking or jogging a mile.

Richardson Park Elementary

Physical Activity

“ABLE” is a multifaceted approach to increase student’s physical activity. New programs were introduced this year including Pep Squad, Hula Hoop Club, Mileage Club, Healthy Habit Backpack contest, Morning Brain/Body Time, Boost Up and Hip Hop.

West Seaford Elementary

Nutrition

The "Eating the Alphabet" program offers free fresh fruits and vegetables to the students who then track where the produce is grown and harvested using a map in the school lobby.

Seaford Central Elementary

Nutrition

Seaford Central Elementary offers the Superstar Garden which provides staff an opportunity to teach in an outdoor classroom. Children learn about growing fresh food and get to sample a wide range of fruits and vegetables.

Milton Elementary

Nutrition

Milton Elementary has 1) eliminated sugary beverages in the school; 2) eliminated unhealthy snacks like candy and chips, replacing them with items such as low fat pretzels and popcorn.; 3) replaced the junk food at school parties with vegetables, fruits, cheese and water; 4) replaced food-based fund raisers like bake sales with non-food items such as pencils, erasers and other classroom items; and 5) adopted the Go, Slow, Whoa program, part of CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) using posters to educate children about nutrition.

Brandywine School District

Nutrition

The Brandywine School District has systematically removed items like fried chips, high fat ice creams, and sugar-laden beverages and replaced them with healthy choices like baked potato chips, 100% fruit juice and water.

Brader Elementary

Nutrition

Café Contests: Morning announcements include a food fact every day. Once a month, cafeteria staff hold a contest, asking the students to draw pictures of a healthy breakfast and write a short essay about why eating breakfast is so important. The best entries are awarded prizes, announced and read on the morning announcements and the winners’ pictures are posted.

Woodbridge Elementary School

Nutrition

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. Students in grades pre-kindergarten through 4th grade receive a healthy snack consisting of fresh fruits or vegetables three afternoons a week. The snacks often coincide with classroom instruction about fruits and vegetables and their health benefits.  

Brookside Elementary

Nutrition

Child Nutrition – Cafeteria staff now participates in promoting nutrition education to students. Through the lunch time participation in nutrition games, students can win trinket and books.  In addition to the cafeteria games classroom education in nutrition has be increased and when lessons are given cafeteria workers bring fresh vegetables to the class.
