Kyle Gallagher from New Castle, DE, enjoys the 18th Annual Summer Picnic with Delaware State Troopers Scott Mauchin (left) and Bobby Boyd at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.
Each year, the Child Life Department at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children partners with the Delaware State Police and Delaware State Troopers Association to sponsor a summer party for patients and their families.
Wednesday, May 30, troopers, hospital volunteers, and community entertainers came to the hospital to help serve food and direct some of this year's activities. More than 100 patients and families, along with many visitors, attended the picnic. Additionally, troopers visited with patients inside the hospital who were not able to come down for the picnic.
Both the kids and their parents enjoyed the arts and crafts, specialized police units, police chopper, airbrush tattoos, and music. And as always, the pie throwing booth was the messy highlight of the afternoon. Of course, it wouldn’t be a picnic without a constant stream of food. Many thanks to Bethany Blues Restaurant in Lewes, Bernie’s Water Ice in Wilmington, as well as Super Fresh and Philadelphia Pretzels, both on Naamans Road, for their generous donations of food and services.
The event offers a break from the stress often associated with the hospital experience, allowing patients to put aside their normal hospital routines and just be kids.
