Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is the first children’s hospital in the Delaware Valley to offer the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System. This advanced Si robotic technology is a significant arrival because of the considerable advancement it offers our surgical staff in the way we treat children in the communities we serve.
The technological advancements of the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System provide our surgeons with unparalleled precision, dexterity and control that enable a minimally invasive approach for many complex surgical procedures. Initially, pediatric urologists at duPont Hospital for Children will use the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System to perform certain surgeries involving the kidney and bladder. In the future, our ENT and general surgeons will also offer robotic-assisted procedures.
Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery in which a surgeon, with the help of a robot, performs very precise movements through small openings or ports in the body. The Si robotic technology allows our surgeons the ability to perform a greater variety and complexity of surgical cases, such as treating children with conditions involving the kidney and bladder.
The da Vinci® Si™ has several unique features designed to provide additional clinical benefits and efficiency in the operating room, many of which translate to patient benefits. Here are a few features of the da Vinci® Si™:
- Enhanced 3D, high-definition vision of operative field with up to 10x magnification
- Superior visual clarity of tissue and anatomy
- Surgical dexterity and precision far greater than even the human hand
- Updated and simplified user interface to enhance OR efficiency
- New ergonomic settings for greater surgeon comfort to help prevent surgeon fatigue
Children undergoing robotic surgery may experience:
- Faster recovery
- Less pain
- Less blood loss and scarring
- Fewer infections and post-operatives complications
- Reduced length of stay
“We put our families first in everything we do at Nemours. The latest advancements in minimally invasive surgery allow kids the possibility of a faster recovery and a shorter hospital stay, which translates to letting them do what they do best — be a kid.”
— Kevin Churchwell, MD,
CEO, Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
“da Vinci’s advanced level of technology takes surgery beyond the limits of the human hand. This level of technological sophistication complements our goal of doing whatever it takes to provide children the highest quality of care, as well as extending minimally invasive surgery to the broadest possible base of patients.”
— Paul Kempinski,
COO, Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
