Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children Accredited as a Clinical Pastoral Care Education Center

Monday, Nov 19, 2012

Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Wilmington

Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children has been granted a full, seven-year accreditation as a Clinical Pastoral Care Education training center by the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy.

Key Facts
  • Pastoral Care has been a service of Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children since the founding of the Nemours Institute by Jessie duPont. Mrs. duPont was a woman of faith and believed that there should be pastoral care in a hospital setting.
  • Pastoral Care became its own department in 2004 when the Rev. Hannah Wilson was hired as the first Director and immediately explored options for establishing a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program.
  • Upon review by College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy, it was determined that the “CPE program at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is a well-planned and coordinated program of studies for the ordained, lay professionals, and students of ministry.”
About the Rev. Bryan Bass-Riley

The Rev. Bryan Bass-Riley, Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor

  • In 2008, the Rev. Bryan Bass-Riley, an ordained teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church, with a Masters of Divinity from Princeton University and a Masters in Pastoral Counseling from Neumann University, was hired and began offering CPE training at the hospital. The Reverend had significant training in trauma and critical incident debriefings, grief and loss, and pediatric chaplaincy as well.
  • He developed a program in three formats where trainees were afforded an actual practice of ministry to persons, families, and caregivers in different clinical settings of the hospital. The formats include a 10-week summer intensive unit; a 37-week extended unit from September through May; and a 9-month residency with stipend.
