Orlando, FL — Nemours Children’s Hospital unveiled a specially designed Facebook poll today that will enable the community to decide how to best use a $500,000 grant to enhance care for children at the hospital, which opens in the fall of 2012. The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation of Winter Park, Florida provided the generous grant to Nemours without any restrictions. In turn, Nemours is asking the community to decide how to best use the funds to further elevate the care available to children in the Central Florida community.
Nemours has identified three programs that would be enhanced using these grant dollars and is encouraging community members to visit Facebook.com/Nemours to learn more about each of the programs and cast their vote for their favorite. Voting runs through September 26. Patients of Nemours may also vote utilizing paper ballots at the Nemours Children’s Clinics in Orlando, Lake Mary and Viera during this time. Nemours will combine the online votes with the paper ballots and announce the winning program on Wednesday, September 28.
The three program enhancements include:
KidsTRACK Care Coordination
Imagine your child has just been diagnosed with a medically complex condition. When you have so many questions, where can you turn for answers and trusted advice? Through Nemours KidsTRACK (Teaching, Research, Advocacy, Community and Knowledge), a care coordinator will provide a single point of contact for families. Whether it’s helping set up doctors’ appointments and talking to insurance agencies, or preparing families to return home by providing training on proper use of medication, our care coordinators will be there for families every step of the way, ensuring a smooth transition from hospital to home life.
Hospital Healing Gardens
What if a hospital stay could also mean an inspirational and transformative healing journey for a child? Our Discovery Garden will create an enriching experience for patients and families, with an acre of interactive outdoor areas devoted to the five senses — sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. Children can explore in a garden filled with herbs and vegetables, create music on the xylophone benches and free-standing drums, experience a wide variety of fragrant flowers, and even find their way through hedge mazes and colorful sculptures.
Can a trip to the Emergency Department be made less stressful for families? The Emergency Department at the new Nemours Children’s Hospital will do just that, making the entire experience easier and more calming for your family. While you wait for test results, escape and relax with your child in one of our “soothing sanctuary” play areas or enjoy interactive entertainment like educational games, videos and activities. Our Emergency Department will also include a child life specialist who will talk to families and their child, using technology to help explain information that can often be difficult
The history of the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation chronicles a legacy of leadership and advocacy for the needs of children. It is this legacy and the Nemours mission to “restore and improve the health of children” that inspired the foundation’s Board of Directors to approve a $500,000 grant to enhance the Nemours Children’s Hospital and its mission, through community philanthropy.
“Nemours is creating something special in pediatric health care, a new hospital for families designed by families, and that is why we want the experts — our community’s families — to choose how we further enhance our new hospital and the care we will be providing children,” said Roger Oxendale, senior vice president and CEO of Nemours Children’s Hospital.
