First Lady Partners With Nemours on Visit to Florida
Nemours Brings Its Expertise on Combating Childhood Obesity
As First Lady Michelle Obama tours Central Florida to celebrate the second anniversary of Let’s Move!, on Feb. 11, Nemours will provide the children and families attending with fun physical activity, information and resources on how to live a healthy, active lifestyle.
Nemours will lend its expertise on childhood obesity prevention as a key partner at an invitation-only Faith & Communities event at Northland Church in Longwood Saturday morning. During the pre-show, Roger Oxendale, CEO of Nemours Children's Hospital, will introduce Dr. Laura Bailet, Executive Director of Nemours BrightStart! who will share her love for reading with an anticipated crowd of more than 4,000 through an Action Story activity.
That afternoon, guests will visit the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World® Resort to enjoy a few hours of outdoor activities and fun. During this event, Dr. Lloyd Werk, Division Chief of General Pediatrics at Nemours Children's Hospital, and his team will offer Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings and Body Fat analyses in both English and Spanish. Nemours associates will provide families with brief counseling on opportunities for eating healthy and being more physically active.
Let's Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady on Feb. 9, 2010, to solve the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so children born today will grow up healthier.
Nemours teamed up with the First Lady's Let's Move! campaign in June 2011 by supporting the launch of Let's Move! Child Care. With more than 12 million U.S. children in child care each day, Let's Move! Child Care is a nationwide call-to-action that empowers providers to make positive health changes in children that could last a lifetime. The Let’s Move! Child Care website, created and hosted by Nemours, offers free tools, information and a customizable action plan to help providers achieve the initiative's goals: voluntary healthy eating, increased physical activity, and screen time limits. The website has generated nearly 40,000 unique visits and resulted in more than 2,100 registrations.
