Nemours Health & Prevention Services (NHPS) is noted for advancing child care nutrition and physical activity standards along with training and technical support to help providers implement these standards. The National Office spearheaded a conference that brought together early education and health leaders to focus on obesity prevention in child care for the first time ever.
Subsequently, we created the Healthy Kids, Healthy Future Steering Committee to continue promoting obesity prevention in the child care setting by spreading the model developed by NHPS in Delaware, and other best practices and policies.
Through multiple tactics, repeated conversations and strategic partnerships, Nemours’ vision is beginning to be fully realized and will ultimately reach the 12 million children in child care across the U.S.
This comprehensive initiative launched by first lady Michelle Obama seeks to solve the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation and includes a specific focus on early childhood. The White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity issued recommendations focused on the child care setting and cited the NHPS model as best practice. Let's Move! »
Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act
The lessons learned from NHPS’ work were critical to Nemours’ advocacy during reauthorization of the child nutrition programs last year. Nemours’ National Office spent over two years ensuring that the Delaware model for wellness in child care was replicated in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act to impact the 3.2 million children that participate in the federal nutrition program for child care, the Child and Adult Care Food Program. Let's Move! Child Care
Nemours also partnered with the First Lady to launch Let’s Move! Child Care, a new national initiative to encourage child care providers to voluntarily adopt higher nutrition and physical activity standards. We created a website, Let’s Move! Child Care, to house this initiative.
Partnership for a Healthier America
