Cardiology (Heart Care)

tiny cardiology patient with breathing tubes

Most children with a heart condition are born with a congenital heart defect (when their heart didn’t develop normally or completely in the early weeks of pregnancy). So the sooner kids can get diagnosed and treated, if needed, the better.
When little hearts need help and families need hope, Nemours’ experienced, caring pediatric cardiology teams are there.

Read More About Pediatric Cardiology

No matter what kind of heart problem your child has or where you live, our teams of pediatric cardiology experts use the latest, most advanced technologies to diagnose and treat children of all ages with all kinds of pediatric heart disease, from the mild to the extremely complex. We specialize in early detection and repair, so that your child will have the best possible chance for a healthy future.

Nemours’ pediatric cardiology specialists are convinced that virtually all forms of childhood heart disease, even the most unusual and complicated, can be treated. We work together with everyone involved in your child’s health, whether it’s members of our own pediatric cardiology team, other Nemours specialists, your primary care physician or pediatrician, or other health care providers. We make sure everyone’s on the same page so that your child can get the most efficient and highest quality care.

We also believe in a strong partnership with the families we see. Our team might know your child’s heart, but only you know your child best. We want you to be an active participant in the decision-making process. That’s why we take the time to: explain the diagnosis and treatment in understandable terms, present all of the options, and invite your family’s input for creating the right treatment plan for your child.

No matter what kind of heart problem your child might have, we’re here to offer comprehensive, compassionate pediatric cardiology care and to partner with your family, guiding you every step of the way.

Our team of experienced, compassionate board-certified pediatric cardiologists and experienced nurses at Nemours Children’s Clinic, Pensacola provides diagnostic cardiology services, plus comprehensive evaluation and management of heart disease for children from birth through age 17.

Compassionate Pediatric Cardiology Care

At Nemours Children’s Clinic, Pensacola, your child may receive non-invasive (non-surgical and non-cardiac-catheterization) cardiac services that include diagnostic tests such as cardiac ultrasounds, stress testing, and electrocardiogram (EKG).

Or, your child might need an echocardiography (also called an “echo” or an “ultrasound of the heart”), which allows our cardiologists to see the heart’s structure and how the blood circulates through it. This is a non-invasive, painless procedure that can be done in our echocardiogram room, which was specially designed to be colorful and comfortable for kids. Your child can even select a video to watch while we perform the test.

Reasons You May See Us

If your appointment is for an initial consultation, you may have been referred to us by a primary care or pediatricians’ office. We see children from all over the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama for evaluation of these common symptoms:

  • heart murmurs
  • chest pain
  • fast heartbeat
  • palpitations (irregular heartbeat)
  • cyanosis (blue coloration)
  • fainting

Pediatric Heart Tests

We also share a Cardio-Pulmonary Testing Lab with the Pulmonology Division of the adjoining Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital, whom we partner with to offer your child top-quality, comprehensive pediatric care. The lab gives us the added ability to perform a cardiopulmonary exercise assessment (also called an “exercise test” or a “stress test”) if your child needs it.

In an exercise test, kids are attached to an EKG machine and their heart rate and rhythm are measured while exercising — for example, riding a stationary bicycle or walking on a treadmill under supervision. If your child has or might have a heart problem or has undergone heart surgery, this test will help you to know which kinds of physical activities are OK and which ones aren’t. It can also pick up abnormalities in the heart’s rhythm that aren’t obvious during rest.

To offer our patients the most comprehensive services, we also work closely with several pediatric heart surgery centers and provide follow-up care for children who may need heart transplants. Kids who need further treatment are admitted to our adjoining pediatric partner, Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital.
