Our Nemours board-certified pediatric endocrinologists are specially trained in helping families learn to successfully manage diabetes. Our teams of experts — including certified diabetes educators, advanced registered nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, licensed clinical social workers, and others — will provide the tools, a personalized treatment plan for your child, and ongoing education and support you need to help ensure your child maintains a healthy lifestyle.

Your Child’s “Every Day” Diabetes Checklist

Because an emergency can happen anywhere, being prepared is important. Depending on your child’s insulin regimen — injections or insulin pump therapy — the following items should be part of your child’s “Every Day Pack” and carried by you and your child at all times:

  • medic-alert bracelet (worn by your child always)
  • glucagon emergency kit
  • blood sugar meter, lancets, and test strips
  • nsulin pen or syringes
  • vial of short-acting insulin
  • if using insulin pump – extra batteries and pump supplies
  • glucagon
  • alcohol wipes
  • ketone strips (urine or blood)
  • fast-acting carbohydrate sources: 3-4 glucose tablets or gel, small juice box, small box of raisins, or 5 Gummy savers
  • portable snack – cheese crackers or granola bar and bottled water
  • current list of all insulin: carbohydrate ratios, correction factor
  • extra batteries for your meter
  • emergency phone numbers

Learning that your child has diabetes can be difficult to take in. You may be concerned about how your child will manage the daily responsibilities of the disease. With the help and guidance from our board-certified pediatric endocrinologists and other diabetes specialists at Nemours duPont Pediatrics, Philadelphia, you and your child will have the support and care needed to succeed in managing diabetes every day.

Our pediatric endocrinology team includes pediatric endocrinologists, a physician assistant, nurses, and a certified diabetes educator. We have the experience to evaluate, diagnose, and develop a treatment plan that works best for your child’s needs. We also offer the convenience of onsite services for lab work and testing.

If your child needs more specialized diabetes care, our diabetes doctors will refer and care for your child at nearby Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE, or Nemours duPont Pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Helping You and Your Child Succeed in Managing Diabetes

In addition to our one-on-one personalized care, we want to make sure your child is comfortable in managing diabetes on a daily basis. A member of our pediatric endocrinology team is available to help you and your childlearn how to:

  • check and track blood sugar levels throughout the day
  • provide ongoing support

And we’ll work with your child’s school nurse and others who care for your child when you’re not around to make sure they know how to manage your child’s diabetes, too.
