Headaches

A child with a headache rests on her father's shoulder

Every child gets a headache now and then. But for some, they can be a serious and recurring problem. Migraines in children can have a major impact on how kids feel, act, play, and do in school. Ongoing headaches in children are stressful for parents, too — watching your child endure pain can be upsetting. But our teams of headache experts are here to help manage and put a stop to your child’s pain.

The headache program at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children provides a comprehensive approach to evaluating and treating recurring headaches in children in Wilmington, DE, and the Delaware Valley.

Your initial visit may be with a specially trained pediatric neurologist or other expert, who will check for secondary causes (that could be causing the headaches) and will start treatment if necessary. A specially trained advanced practice nurse (APN) in the Neurology division will follow and manage your child’s day-to-day care, coordinating with other providers as needed.

How We Care for Migraines and Headaches in Children

Our expert staff will take your child's complete medical history and conduct a thorough neurological exam to establish the nature, duration, frequency, and possible triggers of your child’s headaches. We’ll determine whether your child is having migraines or another kind of headaches and order imaging studies (radiology tests), if needed.

In addition to treatment with medication, we may recommend Healing Touch or other integrative medicine therapies, which we can offer right here at the hospital. We’ll also educate your child — and your family — about lifestyle changes that can reduce the intensity and frequency of your child’s headaches.

Helpful Hint for Controlling Headaches and Migraines: Remember the 8s

    • exercise every day for at least 1 hour
    • almost never drink soda
