Nemours takes great pride in research so that we can better serve children with cancer and blood and bone disorders today and in the future.
The vision of our pediatric cancer specialists and scientists at the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (NCCBD), located at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE, is to build one of the nation’s top childhood cancer research centers, developing strategies to improve prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood cancers.
Our expansive team of doctors, nurses, and scientists, from throughout all Nemours locations, work together on the NCCBD team to make a difference in childhood cancer treatment and diagnosis. Through our shared goal of discovering new ways to improve the lives and futures of children with cancer and blood and bone diseases, we’re dedicated to bringing new discoveries from the laboratory to the patient’s bedside.
Nemours is proud to be part of groundbreaking collaboration called the Delaware Health Sciences Alliance (DHSA). This alliance allows our researchers and staff to use the vast resources at both Thomas Jefferson University in Pennsylvania and University of Delaware.
In Florida, our Nemours experts collaborate with many renowned institutions and medical school faculties to enhance our research efforts with childhood cancer studies and in developing new brain tumor treatment. Some of those include:
We’ve brought the best physicians and scientists together to build a world-class center.
Our pediatric hematology and oncology specialists from each of our Nemours locations work with and support many Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and investigator-initiated clinical trials. Nemours often offers clinical trials related to hematology. A clinical trial is a study that evaluates new medicines, new devices, new treatments, or new applications for old treatments. Our Nemours physicians are leaders in the Children’s Oncology Group and are actively involved in defining the National Clinical Research Agenda.
Clinical trials are safe and supervised by a qualified physician, under strict guidance of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Patient safety is extremely important to the FDA, to those conducting the studies, and to everyone at Nemours. In a clinical trial, children participating in the study are monitored closely, and families may refuse any aspect of the study treatment or completely discontinue their child’s participation in the clinical trial at any time.
