Pulmonology Programs for Children in Northeast Florida

Nemours offers a variety of pediatric pulmonology specialty programs and services, many unique to the area, to help children and families in the region breathe and sleep easier. We treat children of all ages, from birth to adolescence.

Kids-Only Pulmonary Function Laboratory

The pediatric pulmonology and respiratory team evaluates children with respiratory disorders using cutting-edge technology. Tests are conducted in a colorful, kids-only pulmonary function lab and administered by experienced respiratory therapists who work exclusively with children. Our testing services include:

  • exercise challenge (symptoms are observed and evaluated by measuring a child’s breathing rate after running on a treadmill)
  • spirometry with bronchodilator challenge (measures how much air is held in the lungs by inhaling and exhaling into a handheld device called a spirometer)
  • lung plethysmography (measures the total lung volume after deep inhalation.)
  • VO2 max/oxygen consumption studies (measures the maximum amount of oxygen used during exertion)

Respiratory Therapy Services for Kids of All Ages

Our pulmonary specialists and nurses work closely with registered respiratory therapists and trained pediatric nurses to provide expertise, guidance and a variety of other services that include:

  • supplying medical gases needed for treatment
  • managing ventilator support
  • administering aerosol medications
  • performing lung function testing
  • educating families about equipment provided for home use

Northwest Florida’s Only Nationally Accredited Cystic Fibrosis Center

Ours is one of only 10 Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation Care Centers in Florida — and it’s the only accredited center in Northwest Florida. We are also the only Core Care Center serving the area between New Orleans, Birmingham and Gainesville. The Center offers positional, percussive and airway clearance therapies for children with CF and coordinates care with gastroenterologists, respiratory therapists, nutritionists and social workers who provide families with complete support and guidance in managing cystic fibrosis and related conditions.

As a CF Foundation Care Center, we’re involved in CF-specific clinical research trials. We also host a yearly CF family education day and are actively involved with educating doctors, nurses and other clinical specialists in the care of children with cystic fibrosis.

Integrated Asthma Care for Kids

Our asthma care combines teaching children and families about the disease with clinical programs developed by health professionals in both pulmonary medicine and allergy/immunology. Once our pulmonologists make an asthma diagnosis, they will provide you with the tools to successfully manage your child’s condition with fewer medicines, and often fewer trips to the emergency department. As part of our commitment to whole-child health, we also host an annual camp for kids with asthma.

Neonatal Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Treatment (BPD)

Brochopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), also known as chronic lung disease (CLD), is lung inflammation that can develop in premature infants after long-term respirator use due to respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Nemours pulmonologists and neonatologists at The Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) carefully monitor and treat babies with BPD and provide appropriate follow-up care throughout your child’s development.

Care for Respiratory Complications in Neuromuscular Disease

Weak muscles and poor muscle coordination caused by neuromuscular disorders such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), muscular dystrophy and congenital myopathies, can affect any part of the upper airway. Our specialists anticipate and treat complications that may result from these conditions, including:

  • reduced lung function and hypoventilation
  • chest congestion/mucus plugging that can lead to collapsed lung (atelectasis)
  • swallowing problems that can cause choking (aspiration)
  • airflow blockage (obstruction)
  • sleep disorders (obstructive sleep apnea)

Respiratory Support

Children with chronic (develop over time) or acute (sudden) respiratory conditions sometimes need respiratory support to help them breathe easier, especially during respiratory failure. Respiratory support includes non-invasive devices (such as continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP and bilevel positive airway pressure, or BiPAP) and invasive devices (such as a tracheostomy tube in the neck, or endotrachael tube in the mouth or nose). The pulmonologists at Nemours Children’s Specialty Care, Pensacola have extensive expertise in respiratory support.

Pediatric Sleep Disorders

The pediatric sleep medicine experts from Nemours evaluate and treat sleep disorders in children. In addition to working with highly skilled pediatric respiratory therapists and sleep technologists, we partner with other pediatric specialists, such as otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat, or "ENT"specialists), neurologists, allergists and immunologists to give your child the healthy benefits of restful sleep.
