Activity Kits
Nemours Health and Prevention Services (NHPS) piloted these Activity Kits to enthusiastic response from child care providers who participated in the first cohort of our Child Care Learning Collaborative. We have had great success with them, especially if providers experience them in action at a training session, before using them with preschool children. We encourage teachers to keep the kits right on an open shelf in their classrooms, so that they can pull them out instantly, whenever they need to get children moving, learning and having fun.
Type of activity: Instant fun and games to increase awareness of nutrition, moderate to vigorous physical activity, motor skills, team building, and creative thinking as teachers and children collaborate to play and create their own games.
Materials needed: Four shoebox-sized plastic boxes to store all necessary equipment, as well as three activity cards for each box. The kits are easy to store right in the classroom so that teachers are always prepared with engaging physical activities for preschool children:
Kit 1: Nutrition includes plastic fruits and vegetables and activity cards
- Fruit & Vegetable Olympics
- Let's Go Picking
- Messy Fruits & Vegetables
- Salad Toss
- What Could It Be?
- Where Does It Go?
Kit 2: Moving and Dancing includes bandanas, Barnyard Dance book, Shake It Up CD and activity cards
Kit 3: Tossing and Catching includes bean bags, cones, beach balls and activity cards
Kit 4: Jumping for Fun includes foam balls, cones, beach balls, jump ropes and activity cards
What to do:
- Create your own Activity Boxes for your program!
- Assemble needed equipment, along with the cards, and place in clear, lidded plastic shoeboxes. Ours have handles, making them easy to transport to the playground, lobby, hallways, or to a movement station in the classroom.
- Roll out the Activity Kits to your preschool team. Have fun and explore the kits with them. Play some games! Invent a few of your own!
- Use the Activity Kits in your preschool classrooms every day. As the children get comfortable with the games, work together to create new ones.
