One-Mile Run/Walk for Kids and Families on the Wilmington Riverfront

May 19th event will include more than 100 children from P.S. DuPont Middle School who have taken part in a multi-week physical activity behavior change program.

Regular physical activity is a key factor in promoting better overall health. This Saturday in Wilmington more than 200 childre and adults will run or walk a one-mile course as the city gears up for the marathoners to race on Sunday. The major sponsors of Run 1 4 Fun, Nemours Health and Prevention Survesr and the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, will also use the event to communicate health messages.

"Exciting work is being done to improve the motivation and ability for families to stay active and healthy," said Debbie I. Chang, MPH, Executive Director of Nemours Health and Prevention Serivces.  "This event gives us the opportunity to convene kids and parents in a fun activity on teh eve of the Delaware Marathon, and get them thinking about making healthy choices as a family."

Run 1 4 Fun highlights include:

  • The one-mile run/walk starts at 12 noon.  Every child get a t-shirt and medal.
  • Captain Jack Sparrow (from Pirates of the Caribbean) will set the runners/walkers in motion and cheer their finish.
  • Nemours/duPont Hospital will offer games with health themes, information, and prizes.
  • Food and music.
