Promoting Healthy Lifestyles in Delaware Schools

The school environment – both physical and social – plays a central role in children’s lives. Given the amount of time children spend there, changes in school policy and practice can be one of the most effective and efficient ways to influence children’s health. A growing body of evidence also suggests that healthy habits, such as eating breakfast and being physically active, can contribute to academic success. So for schools, paying attention to student health is a win-win situation.

Collaborating with School Districts for Healthy Policies

NHPS has launched a series of collaborative learning sessions with the goal of helping school districts to develop and implement robust school wellness policies that support 5-2-1-Almost None behaviors, such as:

  • Opportunities for physical activity during the school day (in addition to PE class)
  • Healthy food and beverage options at all locations on the school campus, including vending machines, celebrations, snack bars, and school stores
  • Increased access to fruits and vegetables
  • Health education that builds students’ skills for eating healthy and being active
  • Health promotion for school staff, who serve as important role models for students

Currently we are working with the Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christina, and Red Clay school districts in Delaware.

Changing State Policy for Healthy School Environments

On the road to wellness policy implementation, our partner districts are learning what works best to create healthy school environments for their students. NHPS would like to spread the knowledge that is gained in wellness policy implementation from our partner school districts to the state level. This will ensure that all Delaware students experience the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity at school. Learn more about NHPS’ state policy agenda.
