Gastroenterology Procedure Lab

Nursing Manager: Lisa Sayo, BSN, RN

Lisa SayoThe Gastroenterology Department provides specialty care to a diverse population of pediatric patients. The majority of the patients cared for by GI are from birth through eighteen years of age. Nursing personnel provide assistance to the Gastroenterology physicians to meet the emergent, preventative and restorative health needs of the patients. Many of these patients need procedures in order to achieve a diagnosis or to address a medical problem.

The Gastroenterology Lab is an area that provides a safe and private environment for both sedated and non-sedated procedures.  The goal of the lab is to provide high quality and cost effective patient care. Procedures can also be performed in other areas of the hospital which include the operating room, medical imaging and directly on a patient care unit. The location of the procedure is dependent upon the type of procedure that is needed as well as the severity of illness that the patient is experiencing.

GI LabThe procedure area is staffed by registered nurses from 8am until 4:30pm Monday through Friday. Emergent procedures that need to be performed after hours are done in the operating room.  Nursing staff is allocated based upon the number, complexity and site of the procedure. The nursing staff has also been cross-trained to work in the clinic area or to assist in the office when the procedure activity is low.
