3F (Specialty & Sub-specialtyMedical) Care Unit

Nursing Manager: Kim Engelhardt, RN, BSN

Kim Engelhardt3F is an 18 bed Gastrointestinal /General Pediatric Unit of the A. I. Dupont Hospital for Children. Our unit specializes in the care of children with gastrointestinal disorders including but not limited to diagnosis such as Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, GERD, pancreatitis, cyclic vomiting, as well as medically complex patients. 3F also cares for NICU graduates with a variety of gastrointestinal diagnosis.

Each patient room is equipped with state of the art cardio respiratory bedside monitors and bedside computers that allow for staff to access a patient’s electronic medical record. These computers are also used in the barcoding administration of medications. Barcoding ensures patient safety by verifying that the correct medication is given to the appropriate child. 3F served as the pilot unit for the barcoding process, which now has been initiated hospital wide.

Our staff is committed to providing the most comprehensive care possible to our patients and their families. This includes providing education and hands on training to our patient’s families, ensuring that the caregiver is comfortable and able to provide whatever medical care is needed for their child at home.

Our delivery of care model focuses on the patient to make certain that the patient remains central to each decision that is made. The care that each child receives is delivered by a multidisciplinary team that includes: physicians, the nursing leadership team which consists of charge nurses and facilitators, the patient care coordinator or bedside nurse, the patient care assistant, the patient service assistant, the clinical educator and any other involved disciplines. This entire team communicates to make the best possible choices for each individual child. Each member of the team is vital to the comprehensive care that each child receives.

The Patient Care Facilitator is a registered nurse with the responsibility of assisting the Nurse Manager and the Staff nurse in promoting safe, quality, and compassionate care to our patients and their families. The bedside nurse or Patient Care Coordinator is accountable for assessing, planning and providing care to assigned patients. The Patient Care Assistant provides care and comfort measures for the patient by assisting with activities of daily living such as feeding, hygiene, and therapy play. The Patient Service Assistant is responsible for the clerical duties of the unit. The Clinical Educator collaborates educational opportunities for the staff and for patients and their families. The team as a whole makes it possible to deliver the best, most individualized care to each and every patient.
