Weight Management Fellowship

Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE

The Pediatric Weight Management Fellowship Program at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, in affiliation with Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU), trains physicians in advanced skills in pediatric weight management.

With accreditation from the Academic Pediatric Association (APA), our 2-year program, one of the country's only programs of its kind, provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of children with serious weight issues. You'll have rich and diverse clinical training as well as research experience to help you expand your skill set and knowledge base in the rapidly growing field of weight management

Our Fellowship Program

Based at duPont Hospital for Children, one of the nation’s most respected pediatric hospitals, you’ll work with a multidisciplinary team of pediatric physicians and clinicians to diagnose and treat children with a wide range of medical issues related to obesity.

Clinical Experience

Your clinical experience provides opportunities to work closely with some of the region’s most respected pediatric specialists in weight management and related fields:

The program, co-developed with Nemours’ Florida-based weight management expert, Lloyd Werk, MD, MPH, includes a series of didactic lectures as well as rich and varied clinical experience. Under faculty supervision, you’ll learn to diagnose and treat outpatients as young as 5 with a variety of obesity-related issues, including diabetes, metabolic diseases, and other disorders.

You’ll collaborate with members of our multidisciplinary care team, including nutritionists, dietitians, psychologists, exercise physiologists, and others,
and will have exposure to our pulmonary and exercise labs. You’ll also collaborate with pediatric surgeons on inpatient procedures such as gastric band and sleeve surgeries.

Research Opportunities

As part of your fellowship, you’ll receive formal training in research protocols, including study design, methodologies, statistical analysis, and preparation and presentation of findings. You’ll receive encouragement and support from our research professionals as you do your own basic science and clinical research.

Through our affiliate, Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, the program also gives you the opportunity to enroll in a master’s degree program in public health at Jefferson School of Population Health.
