Application Process
Not all applicants are invited to be part of the SHSVP because interested applicants always outnumber available placements. Your willingness and desire to make a volunteer commitment as well as previous volunteer and community service experience, personal maturity level, experience with children, educational background, and career interests are taken into consideration during the application process.
Step 1: Apply for the SHSVP
Apply to be a summer high school volunteer during the month of January by completing and returning application materials, which include:
- the application form explaining why you would like to
participate in the program
- the “Consent for Pre-Participation Screening” form signed
by a parent or guardian
- two Letters of Recommendation — High school documentation
Step 2: Interview
If selected as a potential candidate for the SHSVP, you will be invited for an interview. An interview does not guarantee placement in the program.
During the interview, we will discuss your skills, needs, and expectations. We will try to match these to the skills, needs, and expectations of the patients, families, and hospital staff.
Step 3: Background Checks, Medical Screenings, & Volunteer Orientation
If you are accepted into the SHSVP, you will be required to:
- clear background and abuse registry screenings
- gain medical clearance, including urine drug screen, immunization titer, and tuberculosis test
- attend a mandatory, general orientation to prepare you for your time as a volunteer in a hospital environment
- be trained by the hospital staff member designated as your supervisor for department-specific training
