At the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition, we care for infants, children, and adolescents with all types of gastrointestinal and nutritional disorders, including:

  • abdominal pain
  • inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis)
  • celiac disease
  • chronic liver disorders
  • malabsorptive disorders
  • feeding disorders

Services

Comprehensive outpatient and inpatient services are available for the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of routine and complex gastroenterologic disorders.

Our services include:
  • endoscopy/colonoscopy with biopsies
  • pill endoscopy
  • impedance probe studies
  • intestinal manometry
  • breath hydrogen testing
  • esophageal dilation
  • banding and sclerotherapy
  • foreign body removal
  • gastrostomy tube placements
  • liver biopsies
 
Education

Accepting one to two fellows per year, our division has had an established pediatric gastroenterology fellowship program since 2001. Well trained in all procedures described above, our fellows have gone on to join academic faculties throughout the country.

 
Research
Our experienced, well-qualified, and enthusiastic group of research scientists,
research assistants, and technicians are currently focused on:
  • tracheal and middle ear fluid pepsin in the evaluation of GERD in extraesophageal GERD
  • celiac disease
  • identification of serum macrolipase, macroamylase, and gastric lipase
  • pancreatic insufficiency (retrospective review of pancreatic stimulation data)
  • ghrelin and obestatin in serum and gastric biopsies in children with failure to thrive and obesity
  • eosinophilic esophagitis (clinical trials and assessment of the utility
    of serum and stool ECP in follow-up)
  • inflammatory bowel disease/ImproveCareNow Collaborative
  • drug-induced liver injury
  • liver and obesity
  • studies in pediatric liver transplantation

ranked among the "Best Children's Hospitals"
for Gastroenterology
, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2010-11 edition.
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) awarded duPont Hospital for Children the Stage 7 Award.

Stage 7 represents achievement of the highest level on the EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM) – used to track electronic medical record progress at hospitals and health systems. Nemours is one of 59 (or 1.1%) of the more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database recognized by HIMSS Analytics with its Stage 7 Award.

Nemours also received the HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence for
helping pioneer the use of electronic medical records in pediatric health.

The award recognizes leadership in the implementation and use of health information technology to improve patient care and medical outcomes.
