Family-Centered Care

Our board-certified pediatricians, psychologists, and advanced practice nurses provide personalized care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Our goal is to offer outstanding care for all children and families, including underserved kids and those with complex medical and emotional needs.

At Nemours, our patients’ families play an important role as members of each child’s care team. We are committed to always being collaborative, respectful, and compassionate. At the same time, our facilities are designed to maximize the comfort and convenience of families with a child in our care. And to help us measure and improve our performance, we actively solicit family feedback through patient satisfaction surveys.

Education

We educate medical and nursing students, resident physicians, and fellows. Our division is responsible for the General Pediatrics education for Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education Programs of Jefferson Medical College.

  • First- and second-year medical and nursing students participate in shadowing activities, in order to learn about doctor-patient communication skills and the diagnostic process.
  • Under the direct supervision of a licensed physician, third- and fourth-year medical students gain clinical experience by taking patient histories and performing physical examinations.
  • Board-certified pediatricians oversee resident physicians, who have an MD degree and provide direct care during their three-year period of specialized pediatric training.
  • Fellows are physicians who have completed the MD degree as well as three years of Pediatric Residency and are receiving one to three years of further specialized training under the supervision of board-certified pediatricians with expertise in a specialized area of Pediatric Medicine.

Community Involvement

We work closely with schools and agencies in the communities we serve to provide holistic care to children and families.

Examples of our community and advocacy activities include:
  • Reach Out and Read (a national initiative to promote school readiness for preschool children)
  • PlayBall (an initiative of Nemours Health and Prevention Services to promote physical fitness in toddlers and preschoolers)
  • Delaware Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Foster Care Initiative (in collaboration with the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth, and Their Families)

Research

Our research focus is on evaluating the effectiveness of health services to optimize children's health. Our research focus areas include:

  • family-centered care
  • cerebral palsy
  • pediatric obesity
  • health literacy
  • doctor-patient communication
  • patient safety

Our team makes regular contributions to regional and national scientific meetings as well as publications in the major journals in the field of Pediatrics.
