Division of Medical Genetics
The Division of Medical Genetics is integrated in the Department of Pediatrics at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. We provide inpatient consultative services, as well as consultation and ongoing care for outpatients. Our clinical mission is to provide evidence-based and cutting-edge evaluation, testing, and medical care for patients with genetic conditions, resulting in superior outcomes and family satisfaction.
With three clinical geneticists, four genetic counselors, and one
physician assistant, our full service of coverage includes expertise in:
- chromosome and genomic anomalies
- congenital malformations
- dysmorphology
- familial conditions such as tumor predisposition syndromes and myelodysplasias
- genetic causes of developmental delay, intellectual disability,
and behavior differences - single gene disorders
- teratogen exposure
We participate in clinics coordinating subspecialty care
for the following conditions:
- Down syndrome
- heritable disorders of connective tissue
- orofacial clefting and other craniofacial malformations
- osteogenesis imperfecta
- RASopathies (Neurofibromatosis type 1, Noonan syndrome,
Cardio-Facio-Cutaneous syndrome, Costello syndrome,
Legius syndrome and related conditions) - skeletal dysplasia
We collaborate with and see patients in the following services:
- Hematology/Oncology
- Orthopedics
- Perinatal Management
- Transition of Care
We collaborate with the Biomedical Research Department to perform clinical research. Additional clinical research projects focus on our areas of clinical expertise and include Down syndrome, skeletal dysplasia, Costello syndrome, and other RASopathies.
As the educational arm of Jefferson Medical College, we offer:
- Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) of Jefferson medical students
- Graduate Medical Education (GME) of pediatric residents

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) awarded duPont Hospital for Children the Stage 7 Award.
Stage 7 represents achievement of the highest level on the EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM) – used to track electronic medical record progress at hospitals and health systems. Nemours is one of 59 (or 1.1%) of the more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database recognized by HIMSS Analytics with its Stage 7 Award.
Nemours also received the HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence for
helping pioneer the use of electronic medical records in pediatric health.
The award recognizes leadership in the implementation and use of health information technology to improve patient care and medical outcomes.
