Division of Infectious Diseases
The Division of Infectious Diseases (ID) provides inpatient and ambulatory clinical consultations at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE.
Four pediatricians with training and certification in the field of infectious diseases care for children with unusual or recurrent infections, those with severe infections requiring hospitalization, and “diagnostic dilemmas.” An ID nurse practitioner and a specially trained ID pharmacist provide support in the clinical care of patients.
Our areas of research and special interests among our staff include:
- antimicrobial usage
- antimicrobial resistance
- HIV/AIDS
- perinatal infections
- Lyme disease
The division also:
- manages the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at the hospital – which optimizes antibiotic usage in order to improve patient outcomes and reduce antibiotic resistance in microorganisms
- participates in Infection Control and Prevention activities in order to prevent infections from being transmitted in the hospital and our affiliate locations
- is active in education — training medical students, pediatric residents, infectious diseases fellows and pharmacists as well as offering continuing medical education for practicing physicians

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) awarded duPont Hospital for Children the Stage 7 Award.
Stage 7 represents achievement of the highest level on the EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM) – used to track electronic medical record progress at hospitals and health systems. Nemours is one of 59 (or 1.1%) of the more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database recognized by HIMSS Analytics with its Stage 7 Award.
Nemours also received the HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence for
helping pioneer the use of electronic medical records in pediatric health.
The award recognizes leadership in the implementation and use of health information technology to improve patient care and medical outcomes.
