Completely redesigned in 2008, the NICU is a model of family-centered care. Fourteen single-patient rooms allow for a family’s privacy and comfort as they remain with their baby. The number of infant beds can be expanded to 18, if needed.
Amenities include:
- a sofa sleeper
- recliner
- telephone
- data port
- flat-screen TV
- sound-absorbent flooring
- soft lighting
As the educational arm of Jefferson Medical College (and in collaboration
with Christiana Care neonatology), we offer:
- Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) of Jefferson medical students
- Graduate Medical Education (GME) of pediatric residents
- a joint fellowship program in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine
(currently with 12 fellows) - a large clinical and training program for neonatal nurse practitioners
Through the leadership of Robert Stavis, MD, PhD, the division developed a superior electronic medical record, Crib Notes. In addition, we demonstrate our excellence in educational offerings and commitment to the improvement of neonatal care internationally through:
- connections with the March of Dimes
- management of the “Hot Topics in Neonatology” conference
- NICUniversity.org provides neonatologists and other members of the professional neonatology community with continuing education credits as well as cutting edge neonatology research and information
Our neonatal research includes basic studies performed in the animal laboratories of Jan Larson, MD, and Zubair Aghai, MD, at Thomas Jefferson University and the Nemours Research Lung Center, under the direction of Thomas Shaffer, MSE, PhD, at duPont Hospital for Children. We’re also involved in many ongoing clinical trials and health services research programs.
Our areas of research expertise include:
