Department of Pediatrics, Delaware Valley
Our Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a non-surgical specialty, which cares for children and adolescents with acute and chronic conditions that affect the nervous, muscular and/or skeletal systems.
The goal of our program is to maximize the child's ability to move, communicate, interact with people, and live as independently as possible. In a unique, child-centered environment, we strive to encourage independence, provide support, and reacquaint the child and family with the everyday business of living and growing.
Our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation programs includes a:
- variety of outpatient clinics
- 10-bed acute inpatient rehabilitation program at the
Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital in Wilmington, DE
- comprehensive outpatient program
Our areas of expertise include:
- acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain
- cerebrovascular accident/stroke
- cerebral palsy
- traumatic brain injury
- post-concussive syndrome/closed head injury
- gait abnormalities
- toe walking, in-toeing, out-toeing
- newborn/high-risk follow-up, prematurity
- fibromyalgia
- burn care
- gross motor and/or fine motor delay
- congenital nerve diseases
- brachial plexopathies (Erb/Kiumpke)
- lymphedema
- myofascial pain syndromes
- prescription/management of patients with assistive devices,
bracing needs, wheelchairs, adaptive seating - reflex sympathetic dystrophy/CRPS
- spasticity (including Botox injections, oral medications,
and management of intrathecal baclofen pumps) - spinal dysfunction, spinal cord injury, spina bifida
- neuropathies, neuromuscular disorders
- muscular dystrophy
- rehabilitation of any disability affecting function, gait,
and/or speech - prosthetics and orthotics
- wheelchairs and adaptive equipment

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) awarded duPont Hospital for Children the Stage 7 Award.
Stage 7 represents achievement of the highest level on the EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM) – used to track electronic medical record progress at hospitals and health systems. Nemours is one of 59 (or 1.1%) of the more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database recognized by HIMSS Analytics with its Stage 7 Award.
Nemours also received the HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence for
helping pioneer the use of electronic medical records in pediatric health.
The award recognizes leadership in the implementation and use of health information technology to improve patient care and medical outcomes.
