Critical Care
The department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, located in Wilmington, Delaware, is pleased to announce the development of a training program for pediatric critical care medicine.
The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is a 22-bed multidisciplinary unit that admits an average of 1,200 patients per year. We are rapidly growing and our admissions are steadily increasing at a rate of 5-7% per year. Our separate cardiac intensive care unit performs more than 300 surgical procedures per year. We are an academic institution affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There is an active and growing pediatric residency program which currently trains 76 residents in general pediatrics, combined internal medicine and pediatrics, and pediatric rehabilitation medicine. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialty services are represented, including solid organ and bone marrow transplantation. The hospital has 180 total beds and admits nearly 7,000 patients per year. The PICU and training program are staffed by eight board-certified and fellowship-trained intensivists with varying backgrounds and extensive experience in both the clinical and research realms.
There is vast opportunity for both clinical and laboratory research with strong mentorship from experienced researchers. Internal funding for research from Nemours is also available. In addition to the patients cared for at AIDHC, the critical care team also provides medical coverage for pediatric trauma patients at our nearby affiliated Level 1 trauma center. There is a dedicated and very active transport program that serves our large referral base. The pediatric intensivists serve as medical command for all pediatric transports. This is an exciting opportunity for a pediatric resident interested in a career in critical care. We expect that our graduates will go forward to have successful academic careers in tertiary care settings. Our program has recently received full accreditation from the ACGME and we plan to start the training program in July of 2003.
