Gastroenterology

Core Value: We are committed to scholarly and scientific inquiry directed towards the health of children.

Welcome to the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children’s Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. This is an accredited 3-year program affiliated with Jefferson Medical College that will provide comprehensive basic training in gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. Because of the active solid organ transplant program at A.I. duPont Hospital, there is also opportunity to receive training in the care of both liver and small bowel transplant patients. The Fellow will acquire skills in state-of-the-art pediatric gastroenterologic procedures. The division members have special interests in a variety of disorders including inflammatory bowel disease, short bowel syndrome, pancreatic and mucosal disease, hepatobiliary disease, allergic gastroenteropathy, malnutrition, motility and gastroesophageal reflux. The division has a large research staff with several bench and clinical research protocols funded in many of the areas above. In addition, exposure to procedures and research with the large adult gastroenterology fellowship program at Thomas Jefferson University is encouraged.

The gastroenterology service is busy with a large inpatient practice that includes common and complex gastrointestinal disorders, nutrition support, liver and small bowel transplantation, and a full consult service. The outpatient service is likewise busy both at the hospital’s gastroenterology clinic and the satellite facilities we service, such as A.I. duPont Pediatrics at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania.

A.I. duPont Hospital is the premier children’s hospital in Delaware. It stands on the grounds of Alfred I. DuPont’s historic 300-acre estate, Nemours. The 170-bed full-service hospital is equipped to care for children with a wide range of conditions. It is the regional center for the treatment of childhood cancers, cardiovascular conditions, neuromuscular disease, cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, kidney disease, bone dysplasia, respiratory and orthopedic conditions. Inpatient services at the hospital include pediatric medical and surgical units, a cardiovascular care center, pediatric rehabilitation, intensive care and neonatal intensive care. Over 40 medical, surgical and dental subspecialty programs are offered on an outpatient basis, with additional services also provided at Thomas Jefferson University and Bryn Mawr Hospitals, both in Philadelphia.
