Training in Acid-Peptic Disease

Acid-peptic disorders are common in pediatric patients. The most common acid-peptic disorder in infancy and childhood is esophagitis secondary to gastroesophageal reflux, gastritis, duodenitis, and duodenal and gastric ulcer. The trainees will acquire skill develop a management plan and coordinate the management of patients with different experts. They will be able to follow and manage the same cases for periods of months to years, which is essential to provide the trainee with a longitudinal view of these disorders. Didactic lectures on the pathophysiology and clinical treatment of children with acid-peptic disorders will be available through grand rounds and postgraduate courses.

At the end of training period the Trainees will be able to:

  • Execute diagnostic and therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopies
  • Interpret upper gastrointestinal tract histology
  • Conduct and interpret results of esophageal pH probe studies
  • Interpret abdominal plain radiographs and radiographic contrast studies
  • Select and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests
  • Understand the indications, limitations, technical aspects, and complications of the relevant procedures
  • Generate a differential diagnosis, formulate a therapeutic plan
