III. Interpersonal and Communication Skills

The pediatric gastroenterology fellow can demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with patients, their families, and professional associates in order to ensure delivery of optimal care.

Objectives:

By the end of the first year of fellowship training, the following are expected.

  1. Each fellow demonstrates effective communication in a developmentally appropriate manner with patients and families to create and sustain a professional and therapeutic relationship across a broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
  2. Each fellow communicate effectively with physicians, other health professionals, ancillary staff, and health-related agencies.
  3. Each fellow has learned to act in a consultative role to other physicians and health professionals.
  4. Each fellow works effectively as a member or leader of a health care team.
  5. Each fellow maintains comprehensive, timely and legible medical records.
  6. Each fellow is trained in the evaluation of the psychosocial aspects of chronic gastrointestinal disease and in competent counseling of chronically ill patients and their families.
  7. Each fellow participates actively in the teaching of medical students, residents, and less advanced trainees in the pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition program.
  8. Each fellow actively participates in seminars and conferences to gain experience in presenting and defending concepts in an open forum.

By the end of the 2nd and 3rd year of fellowship training, the following are expected.

The skills learned during the first year are further honed and improved upon.
