Electives
Elective time is available in the second and third year of fellowship training. Fellows are encouraged to do a rotation on genetics to expand their knowledge of the newest techniques in molecular genetics and prenatal counseling for families with antenatal diagnosis of anomalies in the fetus. An elective in neonatal surgery is available at duPont Hospital for Children which has a surgical ICN that cares for infants with general and subspecialty surgery. Other electives are available in Teratology, Infectious Disease, Neurology and Gastroenterology.
Follow-up Experience
Fellows in neonatology will be assigned to attend a high risk follow-up clinic to examine infants they previously treated in the intensive care nursery. The goal is to learn the developmental problems that may arise following discharge from the hospital. The neonatal follow-up clinic at Jefferson is currently directed by Dr. Shobhana Desai. In Delaware, the Child Watch Program is under the supervision of Dr. Katherine Esterly. These two programs see over 1,500 high risk infants annually which provides the fellow with a rich and varied experience.
