Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellow is to have clinical and didactic exposure to the following:
Patient Care and Medical Knowledge Focus
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and life support
- Demonstrate proper performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in children
- Resident is to be certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support
- Demonstrate ability to initiate proper fluid resuscitation
- Demonstrate ability to utilize pharmacologic agents in support of the circulation
- Demonstrate ability to utilize electrical therapy for malignant dysrhythmias
- Demonstrate understanding of the management priorities in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and pediatric advanced life support
- Mechanical ventilation
- Demonstrate understanding and effective use of mechanical ventilation in neonates, infants, children, and adolescents
- Pharmacologic support of the circulation
- Demonstrate effective use of pharmacologic agents in support of the circulation
- Indications and techniques for placement of venous and arterial catheters
- Demonstrate proficiency in the placement of venous and arterial catheters, including central venous catheters
- Demonstrate understanding and proficiency in the use of ultrasound in the placement of venous and arterial catheters
- Recognition and treatment of vital organ dysfunction
- Demonstrate understanding and effectiveness in obtaining and interpreting appropriate laboratory information; demonstrate appropriate response to results
- Demonstrate timely recognition and treatment of vital organ dysfunction.
- Emergency transport of critically ill patients within the hospital and between hospitals
- Demonstrate understanding of the management priorities, personnel assignment, and communication necessary to safely transport critically ill children and neonates.
- Recognition, prevention, and treatment of pain in medical and surgical patients.
- Demonstrate ability to utilize proper analgesics and sedatives in a critical care environment.
- Understand the altered pharmacology of analgesics and sedatives in the critically-ill child.
Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- Psychological support of patients and their families
- Gain exposure, by both observation and experience, in competently and compassionately communicating with parents in emotionally – stressful times and being able to offer appropriate support and resources
Systems-Based Practice
- Demonstrate awareness and cooperation with patient safety goals in areas of:
- Communication among caregivers in patient sign-off and transfer
- Medication Safety
- Reducing risk of health-care associated infections
Practice-Based Learning and Improvement:
- Utilize evidence –based research tools (Info-link) to reinforce clinical decision-making
- Accept constructive feedback on medical knowledge and technical skills
Professionalism
- Abide by professional code of conduct at all times during ICU rotation
- Participate in patient rounds and arrive in timely manner
- Be fully engaged in patient care and be prepared for patient presentation during rounds
